For a little background, here is the original Promo:
For years we had heard talks of that day. We have heard predictions from prophets and pundits. We have heard of famine and pestilence, wars and rumors of wars. We even suffered atrocities each greater than the next. Still we did not believe it would ever come.
Then it did.
It started off small. We heard of a strange plague ravaging Eastern Europe. Yet, still we waited. A series of civil unrests and violent uprisings in Africa and South America. Yet, still we waited. We heard rumors of a new leader, of a new terrorist group claiming responsibility for small scale bombings in Madrid, Frankfurt, New Jersey and throughout the Middle East. Yet, still we waited.
Then, on one fateful day, our worst fears we realized. In Cleveland, a small nuclear device called a “Dirty Bomb” was set off. In Austin, Texas an unprecedented chemical attack leaves over 10,000 people dead or injured. Over New York City an EMP device was detonated, strong enough to fry the electronics on nearly all of Manhattan and parts of Brooklyn, the Bronx and Queens, leading to mass rioting and panic. And this was all before the sun rose over the Eastern Shore.
By noon, over fifty American and European cities experienced some type of terrorist attack. By nightfall the world was in chaos, hordes of people in shock hit the streets looting and pillaging. China and Russian, believing their attacks were caused by the other, exchanged a limited nuclear release, most of which severely missed their targets. Churches filled up with believers looking for an answer, expecting a rapture of the saints, only to be attacked or burnt to the ground by others. Military based were flooded with refugees, who eventually turned on their protectors. Chaos reigned.
For the next month, plague and famine ruled the planet. The Midwest was ravaged by a bioengineer strain of cholera that was accidentally released from an abandoned secret lab in Topeka, by a desperate family looking for shelter. Small groups of people started to band together, some seeking protection, others looking to take advantage.
On a small island in the Caribbean, on the set of a popular reality show, word came down that something was not quite right on the mainland. Slowly, reports started pouring in of the attacks and the growing chaos. Eventually even the reports of the respected media outlets turned into chaos, one such outfit reported the overthrow of the American government and the execution of it’s President. Then it was suddenly shut down.
The shows producers had a decision to make. Do they stay in the relative safety of their uninhabited island paradise, or attempt to get home to discover the fates of their loved ones? This debate got heated at points, but in the end the majority of the cast and crew decided that their need to know outweighed their need for safety. They loaded up as much as they could on their production boats and started the perilous journey to the mainland.
The trip was not easy. On the way they lost one of their boats and two members of the crew. Yet, they made it to the Florida Coast. What they discovered took their breath away.
The streets, and buildings were deserted. Miami was burned to the ground. A scouting expedition discovered The Magic Kingdom littered with corpses, the scouts themselves becoming infected and dying before they could deliver their grisly message,. As they made there way North through Florida they were joined by small groups of people, hearing ghostly tails of Horror. Outside of Tampa, they were attacked by a marauding group on motorcycles. They successfully fought them off, but three men, two women and a small boy were killed.
After the attack, they decided to rethink their decision. Throughout Florida they had discovered small towns, simply deserted, but still useable. After another intense meeting, the ruling council of the group decided their best bet was to settle down somewhere, and try to make a life. They would still be able to send out small scouting parties to search for their loved ones, but now survival was key.
They settled down in a small town off the shores of the Lake Okeechobee.
There they began the painful process of starting to live again. They put together a system of government that oversaw their survival. They named this town Paradise. Yet, problems began to arise. Small groups of refugees bringing disease and hungry mouths came to them asking for help. At first, they did what they could, but eventually it became too much for the small town to bear. Yet, the refugees still came. When they were turned away, they became hostile. Small battles and skirmishes broke out.
Eventually, in the most heated debate yet, the town council decided to build a wall, protecting them from the outside, and keeping the refugees away. Yet, another menace was growing. Scouts, the ones that were able to escape with their lives, brought reports of a madman ruling over the an expanse of the southern states. This madman, called simply Jeffe, was believed to be the leader of the Terrorist Cell that coordinated attacks in Eastern Texas and Arkansas on the day the world ended. Now he was organizing an Army. His goal seemed to be the total control of the former American South, eventually joining with other Terrorist leaders, to form a new world order.
The city of Paradise needed a way to protect itself. It needed a new crop of leaders, skilled and dedicated, to prepare for the eventual battle between Paradise and Jeffe’s army. Simply stated, Paradise needed recruits. So, once again the city council met to decide the fate of their blossoming town. In the back, sitting with his much younger wife, was a man that many knew, a man who held a position of power before the day the world ended, but had taken a backseat in the changing world. Yet, when this man spoke, people paid attention. And speak he did.
He proposed an idea that should have smacked the council right in the face, because of its obviousness. He proposed a contest, where refugee leaders would be able to do battle for a place for themselves and their loved ones within the walls of Paradise. This battle, will not be a battle of strength solely, but also of cunning and gamesmanship. This will be a contest to outwit, outplay and outlast their opponents, all for the opportunity to win, not a cash prize, but the ultimate prize, security and survival.
So, this idea was adopted. Scouts were sent out passing the word of the contest. The message spread, first throughout Florida, then beyond. Rumors of Paradise were spoken of by a campfire in Arkansas, and at a small church meeting near Philadelphia. Officers in Jeffe’s army and other small roving military groups deserted their posts, all for this rumor and fought their way down to a predestinated area near the Florida Everglades. Some died along the way, or were captured by armies and other groups. Others gave up and resettled. Yet, still many passed the first and hardest test. Surviving a brutal and treacherous new landscape, on a voyage based on a rumor of a shining Paradise. Yet, for these Survivors, the journey has just begun.
