Okay, here's a story. - The Knives
In my Catholic school, the nuns would always remind us to be on our best behavior. They say that we must stay on the straight and narrow to avoid the path that leads to the destruction of our souls. They also say there are seven deadly sins.
That's not true.
They missed one.
I didn't do because I wanted to. I'm not a bad person, Hebrides. I just wanted to have a little bit of fun. Can a girl have fun and be Catholic at the same time?
Again, I didn't mean to do it. The knives were just lying there. I didn't know what they were for, Hebrides. I thought maybe a lunchlady dropped them. I was feeling bored. All we do at our school is read, read, read. We never get to be creative. It's almost like new ideas are not allowed at our school. I held one knife in each hand and smiled. I could have fun with these.
I walked to the playground, knives in hand. There were many girls there. Suzanne Lancaster was there. Again, Hebrides, as I said the first time, if I did it out of hatred, I would've done it to Suzanne Lancaster. I swear to God Himself, Hebrides, I didn't do it because I wanted to.
I held the knives tightly and walked into the playground. All the girls were shouting at me. "Look out, Nancy's gone crazy." "Whaddya mean 'gone'? She's always been a nutjob!" "Who you gonna pick off first, Nancy?"
I looked at the girls. Yes, I was angry. No, I wasn't angry enough to kill them, but those thoughts did enter my head. To be fair, I must say those thoughts entered my head before I found the knives.
This was the time when Sister Martha came running down the steps. She looked very mad. I hadn't even done anything yet.
"Nancy, what spirit has possessed you, that you would come into this playground with those barbaric knives?"
I thought Sister Martha was overreacting. To say that I was possessed was a bit unfair, wouldn't you agree, Hebrides? You are not a spirit. You are simply the voice in my head. I only did what you told me to do.
I did not know obedience was the eighth deadly sin.
I wonder if someday God will forgive me. Until then, this cell is my interminable confessional. At the very least, Suzanne and her cohorts are not here to torment me anymore. One voice is quite enough.
